Vaping in the UK has undergone a significant expansion since 2012, propelled by a variety of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and non-nicotine systems (ENNDS). With the UK standing as the second-largest global market for vape products worth £2.3bn in 20201, vaping rates among different age groups have also risen dramatically. The age range with the most UK vapers is 35-44 years old, but interestingly, the 18-24 age group, which had the lowest vaping rate in 2020, recorded the highest rate in 20221.
Moreover, vaping preferences are shifting. While 65% of vapers still use refillable tanks, this is down from 77% the previous year. Disposable vapes, on the other hand, have grown in popularity, particularly among younger adults, with usage rising from 2% in 2021 to 15% in 20231. The primary reason for vaping in the UK is as an aid to quit smoking, accounting for 30% of users.
These trends signal a dynamic landscape for vaping in the UK, shaped by evolving consumer preferences and the ongoing quest for healthier alternatives to smoking. As the global e-cigarette and vape market, valued at US$22.8bn in 2022, is projected to grow to US$28bn by 2026, the UK is likely to continue playing a significant role in this burgeoning industry.
